"Buxton People Stop Train"

What's the story

The people of Buxton-Friendship considered the area as private property. Around 1862, when the railway line was being built, the people from the community did not give permission for the tracks to pass through Buxton. The authorities went ahead and built the line anyways. On the maiden journey of the train the villagers came out to protest the train passing through Buxton. They formed a gathering which blocked the path of the train. The Governor disembarked to beg and plead with the crowd to allow the train to proceed. While he was dealing with the crowd, some folks chained the train to the line. As a result, he was forced to compromise and discontinue the tax that the villagers paid for the property.
